"William James's Adirondacks: The Geography of Religious Experience," New York Times travel section, 9/9/2007
(Thanks to Sacha for alerting us to the article! And thanks to a New York Times reader who wrote a letter to the editor in response, turning us on to this William James quote about the Adirondacks:
"I shall stay here doing hardly any work till late in September. I need to lead a purely animal life for at least two months to carry me through the teaching year...."
(Or, to paraphrase for all us non-teachers, "to carry me through the working year."))
